Many Australians are locked into a increasing consumerism oriented society. Where are the values of thrift and frugality?

Let’s have an award for Consumer of the Year. She is the person who keeps our global economy ticking over. Governments around the world are at last recognising our worth, giving us money and telling us to go out and spend. Hooray for the Consumer!

At what point do we look at the alternatives to ‘growth’ as the key panacea for a ‘better’ society? Economic commentary is very good at shrouding references of consumers shopping for things that they probably don’t need as ‘consumer confidence’.
