Has the traditional meaning of “family” changed?
- How are our families and the size of our families, being affected by apartment living?
- Are pets the new kids?
- What does the concept of “family” mean?
- Are family values still important in modern society, or are family members just people we’re related to?

Yes. I think family today incorporates many people. A family can be anyone from your parents to your flatmate.
I think the traditional meaning of family still resonates with most people, but with new technology and ways of living we have extended what a family is and means to us.
I also think mum’s working has had a huge impact on family life. It’s great that woman now have a choice, but it has drastically changed the roles and responsibilities of everyone else in the family as well. In many ways it has become harder to even have a family considering everything that needs to be juggled in order to have both a happy home and work life balance.
It has also made having a family financially difficult as most households now need the two incomes to be able to afford to live, as those on one income struggle to meet the ‘family norm’ of those with two.

I believe that the meaning of family has changed a lot.
Personally my parents have split up and I understand the meaning of family I have tonnes of them they are every where.
but the number of changes in the meaning of family is huge. I do agree with Lily because it can be from flat mates to your dog or fish but you still have your Mum and Dad

I think the traditional meaning of the word “family” has changed however, the values are still there.
I’m a Brit living in Australia and my friends are my family. I value them and love them in a similar way to my real family in the UK.
With families becoming increasingly disparate and spread across the continents its important to build a “surrogate family” wherever you are living.
